Agricultural Areas Trend Analysis
Türkiye's agricultural land use during 2001-2024 has shown significant changes. Total agricultural area changed from 40,967,000 hectares to 38,640,000 hectares(-5.7%). For 2023, total agricultural area is 38,588,000 hectares.
Field crops area constitutes the largest portion of total agricultural land, with 16,745,000 hectares (43.4%) in 2023. Cereals (wheat, barley, corn), industrial crops (cotton, sunflower, sugar beet), and legumes (chickpeas, lentils, beans) are the main products in this category.
Meadows and pastures in 2023 cover 14,617,000 hectares, critical for the livestock sector. However, overgrazing, erosion, and inadequate maintenance threaten the quality of these areas. Sustainable pasture management and rehabilitation efforts are urgent priorities.
Fallow land areas changed from 4,914,000 hectares in 2001to 2,655,000 hectares in 2024 (-46%),decreasing. In 2023, there are 2,814,000 hectares of fallow land. Maintaining fallow practices is recommended for soil health preservation.
Orchard areas show an increase, changing from2,610,000 hectares in 2001 to3,799,000 hectares in 2024 (+45.6%). In 2023, there are 3,694,000 hectares of orchards. High-value product orientation and export potential drive this growth.
Recommendations: Sustainable land use, soil conservation, pasture rehabilitation, and climate change adaptation strategies should be developed. Effective policies must prevent urban sprawl from threatening agricultural lands.
